Introduction

Rush schools is located in Kakamega, Kenya. The schools consist of Early Childhood Development section, primary school section, junior secondary school section and senior secondary school section. The junior secondary school is a new section that has been introduced by the Kenyan government under the new competency based curriculum (C.B.C); this section commences in January 2023. The main focus of your internship program will be assisting in teaching German language and/ or IT (Information Technology) to junior secondary school students, From grade 7 to grade 9.

Duration of Program

You will be personally picked up at Kisumu International airport by Enock Amukowa (host and Operations Manager at Rush Schools) on the day of your arrival. You will be staying at the Amukowa family residence in Kakamega, Kenya. It is a very secure compound and all your basic needs will be met by the family. You will have your own private bedroom but will share kitchen, sitting area and bathroom with the rest of the family. Shopping for weekly meals, snacks, drinks and toiletries etc. is included in the package cost. Full bedding and mosquito net will be provided. Enock will happily drive you to wherever you need to be so do not worry about transportation.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

• Meet staff and students at Rush schools and share experiences with them.

• Teach German language to the junior secondary School students.

• Create, equip and manage Rush schools’ German resource centre.

• Discover the ABCs of teaching in a Kenyan school.

• Take part in community projects carried out by Rush organisation.

• If you have a particular skill set or talent (e.g. photography, artistic talent, cooking) then we will try to integrate this into your internship.

SKILL DEVELOPMENT OVERVIEW

• Learn basic Swahili.

• Learn how to cook Kenyan foods.

• Learn basic farming techniques whist growing your own “shamba”.

• Learn basic woodwork or tailoring skills.

• Take part in a race around Kakamega town, using all the skills you have learnt to navigate your own way around town, solving clues and finding various items.

LIVE LIKE A KENYAN

•.Clothes/food shopping in local markets.

• Experience driving around town in a tuk-tuk, or, if you’re brave enough, on a pikipiki (motorbike taxi).

• Learn how to prepare your own Kenyan chai.

• Eat some local favourites in a typical Kenyan restaurant.
